YBPC FIGHTS HUNGER IN AKRON MONTHLY THROUGH #HASHTAGLUNCHBAGAKRON MOVEMENT
The Young Black Professionals Coalition (YBPC) in collaboration with Hash Tag Lunch Bag will continue their monthly fight the battle against hunger Sunday August 31 with a city wide distribution of sacked lunches for the homeless living in Akron.
Dozens of volunteers will gather at the Akron Urban League at 9am to begin assembling the lunch bags and begin canvasing areas with high numbers of homeless population with food and encouraging conversation at noon.
The #HashtagLunchbag movement was born on Christmas Day 2012 in a Los Angeles apartment with just a small group of friends. The intent was simple, to prepare and deliver a hearty and well-balanced meal to our local homeless community. All chipped in a few bucks before taking a quick trip to the grocery store and purchasing a few goodies. A few more friends were invited to help assemble the lunch bags, blasted some music, and then hit the streets.
In less than two years, hundreds of volunteers have helped spread the #HashtagLunchbag movement. Everyone has the power to share good deed experiences with friends and followers, subsequently encouraging them to also pay it forward.
If you are interested in making a donation or would like more information on this event please contact Roop at 216.408.6453. You may also send an email to [email protected] to receive more information about future community and networking events the Young Black Professionals Coalition will be hosting.

AKRON, Ohio – October 17, 2013—DJ Mr. King hosted his inaugural “Scratchin’ To Survive” Breast Cancer Awareness Mix-A-Thon this past weekend raising $2,400 for the American Cancer Society.
The event, which challenged King to DJ for 24 consecutive hours in the storefront of NEXT Akron in Highland Square, brought in pledges and donations from supporters in the City of Akron and online contributions from fans across the country. The event concluded with a check presentation to the American Cancer Society.
“This was such an amazing event,” said Rhonda Stummer, Regional Relay for Life Manager at the American Cancer Society. “What a great way to raise money and bring attention to the area in a positive way.”

“I still can’t believe I did something this crazy,” said King laughing. “To have this much support behind such a good cause, I really didn’t have time to think about how tired I actually was at the time.”
A sincere thanks goes out to all the supporters, pledgers, sponsors and individuals who helped make Scratchin’ To Survive a success. Hundreds of Youth Attend "Call to Action" Young Men's Conference
@ Univ. of Akron
Over 400 participants attended the "Call to Action" Young Men’s Conference Saturday March 24 at The University of Akron. The conference provided a forum to discuss solutions that young black males age 6 to adults face today. We focused on education, teen fatherhood, incarceration, and positive male role models. Our ultimate goal was to empower our young men to become leaders, engage in positive dialog, connect with community mentors, leaders and expose them to fundamental life skills. Without a doubt we achieved this.
Our keynote speaker, Jeff Johnson, challenged our young men to be successful encouraging them to brave themselves beyond the levels of mediocrity and grasp the opportunities in front of them with no regrets. City of Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic talked to the youth about the importance of preparing themselves today to be leaders of tomorrow while inmates from the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction shared their stories of mishaps in hopes of steering the young men down the opposite path they traveled. In addition there were various breakout sessions for the youth that targeted healthy living and hygiene, sex and interpersonal relationships as well as the dangers of social media and cyber bullying.
We can’t ignore the growing rate of young men dropping out of school; especial young black males. Nor can we ignore that our young people are killing each other. The fight continues and our job is far from being over. We believe the solution is in our working together, sharing resources and building bridges of possibilities for our kids.
Thank you again for all the support surrounding this event. We are excited and looking forward to putting on another great event in 2013!

YBPC 4th of July Charity Kickball Tournament
Attracts Hundreds, Even NBA Champion LeBron James
The Young Black Professionals Coalition and DJ Mr. King hosted its 4th Annual Charity Kickball Tournament Saturday at Erie Island Fields in Akron, Ohio.
The tournament attracted hundreds to field to see eight teams compete for trophy and city bragging rights for the next 12 months.
Things got interesting when 2-time NBA Champion and MVP LeBron James, made a surprise appearance joining Team Returning The Favor. Unfortunately, not even King James and many of his high school teammates could stop Team Trill in the championship game, falling 4-1.
